SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/05/2006 -- Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced that the Earth System Research Center (ESRC), a cooperative venture between Cray and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), has funded a second round of projects that promise to benefit public welfare by improving weather, seasonal climate and natural disaster predictions. ESRC was established in 2005 to advance the science of earth-system modeling over the East-Asia Pacific region and to leverage the collective knowledge of academia, government and industry in Korea by promoting collaboration across the representative communities.
Researchers sponsored by ESRC will use the Cray X1E™ supercomputer at KMA, which is the fastest operational numerical weather prediction system in the world, to pursue a variety of earth science studies. Announced projects include:
-- Development of a flux coupler for the Earth Systems Model at the
Korea Institute of Science and Technology that will help optimize modeling
by combining results from different model subsystems.
-- Design of an efficient meteorological data-sharing system
architecture in a grid environment, to be developed by Kyung Hee
University.
-- Launch of a Local Analysis and Prediction System for use by the
Republic of Korea Air Force.
-- Optimization and sensitivity experiments based on the pre-
processing module in a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, to be
conducted by Bukyung University.
-- Simulation of the Mesoscale Eddy Field using the High-Resolution
Oceanic General Circulation Model, an analysis to be provided by Yon Sei
University.
-- Development and optimization of the Boltzmann Integral Exact
Solution algorithm by the Meteorological Research Institute (METRI)'s Ocean-
Earthquake Laboratory, an organization within KMA.
-- Investigation of short-range ensemble precipitation forecasts
using Initial Conditions and Model Physics Perturbation in a WRF model,
conducted by the METRI Forecast Research Laboratory.
-- Development of a boundless storm surge and tide dynamic coupling
model by Inha University.
"ESRC continues to fulfill its goal of advancing the science of
earth-system modeling for the East-Asia Pacific region on several fronts,
as well as promoting collaboration in the Korean academic community," said
Dongil Lee, chief of the Supercomputer Center at KMA. "The new studies that
have recently been launched provide an excellent example of the range and
depth of the research efforts that the KMA and Cray collaboration is
encouraging. We look forward to benefiting from the incredibly valuable
knowledge that will be gained from these projects."
"Cray and KMA have joined forces in creating a major center for furthering research in a scientific field that has become critical to the welfare of people and societies around the world," said Per Nyberg, Cray's Earth Sciences Segment director. "This new round of studies conducted in Korea under the auspices of the ESRC are sure to result in important advances in weather forecasting, climate modeling and natural disaster prediction."
About the Korea Meteorological Administration
Established in 1949 as the Central Meteorological Office, KMA is a governmental organization dedicated to improving public welfare through the prevention and mitigation of meteorological disasters, and to supporting government and business activities such as aeronautics that depend on accurate weather prediction. KMA comprises the Forecast, Observation and Climate bureaus; the Planning and Information offices; METRI; aviation weather stations; five Regional Meteorological Offices with over 1200 employees; and 94 weather and observation stations. The organization collaborates with other entities engaged in meteorological research and prediction worldwide. Go to www.kma.go.kr/eng/index.jsp for more information.
